Food Tool for the Week –Banning the Drive Thru
I read an article recently regarding a member of the Madison, WI Plan Commission proposing the city put a ban on restaurant drive thru or at least restrict it in some manner. Why? He says, “Given the concern about all the carbon going into the atmosphere, I am not sure we should be building more places for people to sit idling in their cars.”
I found this an interesting notion. Does it have legs?
Several cities in Canada have recently moved to ban drive thru coffee shops and stand alone fast food restaurants (www.ecospace.cc/culture/drive-thru-ban.htm) and the article noted that in the U.S. San Luis Obispo, California has such a ban.
Can we also tack on to this notion of polluting the environment, the idea that we are contributing to the obesity problem in the U.S. because people no longer have to physically walk into a restaurant to get food or drink? – it’s not much exercise, but it does require some effort
Are we taking convenience to the point of hurting our health and our environment? Could be an interesting topic of discussion next time you are at a client dinner.
